About monastery
Druk Amitabha Mountain is dedicated to Amitabha Buddha. Gumba is situated on the top of Ramkot VDC, Kathmandu, Nepal, was founded in 1989 by His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa, spiritual head of the Drukpa Lineage. His Holiness is committed in promoting gender equality within the spiritual community of Himalayan Buddhism.

This land was originally bought to set up a family residence in the early 80's, but His Holiness's mother had seen many insects killed there when excavation work was taking place, therefore she dedicated this land to be used for a beneficial purpose for others, so that the millions of insects killed there would be directly or indirectly liberated.

Location, architecture and decoration of Gumba are very attractive and decoration is based on Buddhist tantra. Panoramic view of Kathmandu city can be seen from here.

In my opinion, this place is become more spiritual than religious.

Amitabha Buddha
Amitabha Buddha is described in the scriptures of the Mahayana school of Buddhism and is known for the deep awareness of individualities. Sanskrit words 'amita' means "without bound" or "infinite" and 'abha' means "light" or "splendor". "Amitabha" is translatable as "Infinite Light," hence Amitabha is often called "The Buddha of Infinite Light."
